In western and developed countries society all too often associate abortion with promiscuous, careless women. This kind of stigma has subjected women to other people’s political, cultural and religious views, and is so misunderstood because unwanted pregnancies can’t be totally prevented as no contraceptive method is 100% effective, and women may be exposed to sexual violence.
Restrictive laws apply to 40 % of the world’s population and too many women are being denied access to adequate health care, limiting their ability to make the best choices for themselves and their families. This discrimination is compounded for many women in vulnerable situations, including girls and adolescents who may face additional restrictions on their access to care, and women living in poverty who may lack the resources to access safe abortions.
