National Pink Day UK 23rd June

Some interesting information about Pink in this link. the U.K. The tradition is pink for baby girls and blue for boys. However, this article mention’s Jesus wearing pink. I have never fully accepted the pink for girls, because I have Belgium heritage and in Belgium it is blue for girls and pink for boys. It is blue for girls because that is the colour the Virgin Mary wore.

During my lifetime, pink for girls had become bigger and bigger; probably commercialisation. I don’t like the connotations of pink; barbies and princess: pigeon holing baby girls from an early age. You go to buy baby clothes and the girls section is all pink. Once looking at baby vests the girls seemed boring and pale whereas, the boys had bright images on such as red tractors and yellow. A babies vest fit wise is neutral. So why, does there have to be boys and girl’s section with the pictures of vehicles  only in boys section; can girl’s not drive? The colour pink becomes associated with unnecessary stereotypes.

Pink can be seen as girly and weak. Although I have heard it said ‘real men wear pink’ men that know their strength and are not afraid to wear pink. Similarly women can wear pink to do all manner of jobs and it does not make them weak.

So time to celebrate; pink day for anyone who wants of either sex!
